Description

In three hours, two people who have never played music write a handpan piece together and play it as the sun goes down. It starts with tea and a first look at the instrument, then Can plays for you for 15 to 20 minutes, a small opening ceremony. From there you learn side by side: how to touch the steel so the note rings, a rhythm pattern to hold the beat, then an arpeggio and a melody. Every handpan is tuned to one scale, so there are no wrong notes. Anything you play fits. Along the way, each of you finds your own melody phrase. Over snacks and drinks you give your piece a name. In the last half hour you build it together: one of you holds the rhythm while the other plays solo, then you swap, with Can joining on drum or guitar. You go home with your piece written out as handpan tab, left and right hand, bar by bar, plus simple practices so you can keep playing wherever you are. Film as much as you like. Important Information

• No music experience needed. Wear clothes you can sit cross-legged in, and come with short nails if you can. The terrace is reached by stairs, so it is not wheelchair accessible. The terrace is covered, so sessions run in the rain.
